When someone asks, ‘What do you do?’ You shouldn’t have to sweat buckets to come up with an answer.
You shouldn’t have to give a long and confusing answer that leaves the person saying, ‘OK, cool…bye.’ and not actually understanding what you do.
These 9 StoryBrand One Liner Examples will help you create the perfect one liner so you can effectively convey your message.
Whether you’ve dug deep into your pocket to attend a StoryBrand event, or read the book, StoryBrand: 7 Part Framework.
Or even if you’ve joined Business Made Simple, writing your own StoryBrand one liner can still be confusing.
You are looking for that perfect answer to the question “What do you do?” and nothing you come up with seems to be good enough.
You want it to strike a beautiful cord while cutting deep into the psyche of your customer. But even after your 100th attempt you are left wondering why it is so hard.
The Mistake You Are Making When Writing Your StoryBrand One Liner
You see, in marketing we test everything. We may start with our best guess, however, seasoned marketers know that the truth is only what the markets tell them.
Many people may “think” they have a great headline or in this case “one liner” but it’s not until it is tested and retested do they know if it is going to work or not.
This is ours (which we are constantly optimising ourselves!):
Results and Co
“You know how most companies don’t know how to differentiate themselves from their competition in a way that when a person hears about them, they say, ‘that’s exactly what I want, I want to buy from you’?
We help companies create a clear, congruent and consistent message across all of their marketing so when a person reads something from them, they say “this is exactly what I want and I want to deal with you.”
Below you will find 9 StoryBrand One Liner Examples that I encourage you to re-engineer and craft your very own.
Take note of how simple they are, 6 of the examples are written in a way that is fit for conversation.
The other 3 are for more indirect forms of contact such as websites, emails, social media, and advertising.
A StoryBrand One Liner is similar to an elevator pitch, except easier to create (despite my struggle stated above), use, and more effective.
It answers the questions ‘What problem do you solve? How do you solve it? What does success look like once it is solved?
After learning and writing hundreds of elevator pitches for clients, I still found it hard to explain the process.
But after reading Donald Miller’s StoryBrand book, my team and I now have a framework that makes creating one liners a breeze.
Your StoryBrand one liner will be used in your email, on your website and also in one on one discussions or even group events.
The biggest tip I have is: Make it sound like a new idea. Your readers and listeners should say, ‘Oh, that’s such a good idea.
I love it.’ Even if there are thousands of businesses like yours – make it a new thing.
Simple Steps in Writing a StoryBrand One Liner
The StoryBrand one liner is a simple statement that answers:
1. What problem do you solve?
2. How do you solve it?
3. What does success look like once it is solved?
But a one-liner doesn’t just stay on your website, it can also be used in everyday conversation, advertisement, social media, emails, etc.
Using A One Liner In A Conversation:
Let’s first discuss how you would answer the question, ‘What do you do?’ in a conversation in the following 6 examples.
After this, I will show you 3 examples for websites, ads, social media etc.
1. What is The Problem?
Donald Miller constantly says, “Unless you are talking about a person’s problem, they’re not listening”. So take a moment and write down your customers’ problems. There will be more than one.
Do they need a plumber because their toilets are constantly clogged? Do they need expert builders who don’t cut corners? Do they need an easy solution to lawn care?
Once you have written them down, choose the main one and then dig a little deeper. How does their problem make them feel?
Storybrand one liner problem section examples:
Plumber:
- “When you have a clogged toilet and don’t know what to do, it can be an embarrassing experience, especially if you have friends coming over.”
Builder:
- “We’ve all heard the stories of builders cutting corners on beautiful homes costing the owners thousands in repairs and their dream home turning into a nightmare.”
Gardener:
- “Heavy rains, injuries, and no free time can cause a beautiful lawn to become a jungle in suburbia. ”
Education:
- “Traditional learning methods can feel stale and uninspiring, leaving students disengaged and struggling to understand and pass exams. ”
Home-delivery restaurant service:
- “After a long day, the last thing you want is to deal with grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning up.”
Healthcare:
- “It can be hard to get answers from the healthcare system.”
2. How do you solve it?
Don’t give a long drawn out introduction of how your company solves the issue. Make it short.
People don’t want a speech, they want to know if you can help them efficiently and effectively, without wasting their time.
Storybrand one liner solution section examples:
Plumber:
- “With quick, 24/7 plumbing services, we will remove the clog within 2 hours of calling guaranteed.”

Healthcare:
- “We empower people to take control of their health with personalised care, transparent communication, and access to the latest treatments and technologies.”
3. What does success look like once it is solved?
You want to do it in a way that makes them ‘feel’ something. You want to make whoever hears or reads your one liner say, ‘That is exactly how I want to feel. I want that future. They can help me achieve it.’
Storybrand one liner success section examples:
Plumber:
- “So our clients can feel relieved they don’t have to deal with the clog themselves.”
